Introduction to our M.Eng. Program

Introduction

The M.Eng. program is a course based professional program that provides the advanced knowledge and skills required to excel in a career as a technical specialist in industry. The program is thoughtfully designed to have value to both practicing engineers and new graduates who seek a deeper technical foundation in one of six recognized fields of study.

The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) program offers opportunities for advanced training in the areas of Mechanical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Engineering Systems and Computing and Water Resources Engineering.

The M.Eng. program offer two study options: first being coursework (CW) and the second being course-work plus a major research project. The coursework option provides graduates with a fuller understanding of engineering principles with a focus on professional development and skill relevant to working in industry. The Major Research Project (MRP) option allows students to deepen their understanding of engineering principals through coursework and engage in cutting-edge engineering research by developing and researching their own research project. The project requires a final written report that is presented in a public seminar followed by an oral examination of the candidate.

Program Requirements

The CW option allows students to customize their M.Eng. experience within the prescribed requirements listed above. By providing the students 2.5 credits of electives, it is possible they will pursue other subjects or technical courses that either enhance their experience or broaden the knowledge base they will be taking back to their current employment or into their future pursuits.

The MRP option provides the student with a hands-on, industry inspired opportunity to put into practice the skills and knowledge they have acquired through the program. In addition to developing a deeper technical knowledge in their chosen field of study, graduates of the MRP option will acquire valuable project management skills such as report writing, making presentations, time management and communications.

All incoming M.Eng. students will be enrolled in the “Coursework” study option by default. If students wish to complete their degree via “Coursework and MRP,” they are encouraged to contact potential advisors within their first semester of study.

Please see the Graduate Calendar section on Engineering Requirements, MEng Program for full MEng Program Requirements.

Coursework (CW)

Students must complete 4.5 credits according to the following:

  • 9 courses (0.5 credits each course);
  • No more than 1.0 credit from senior undergraduate engineering courses;
  • No more than 1.0 credits from outside engineering; and
  • A minimum of 3.5 credits from engineering.

At least 2.5 credits of coursework must be field-specific (see the M.Eng. section of the School of Engineering website for lists of courses). Remaining credits should be chosen in consultation with the Associate Director, Graduate Studies.

Coursework and Major Research Project (MRP)

Students must complete 4.5 credits according to the following:

  • 7 courses (0.5 credits each course)
  • Final Project Course (1.0 credit course);
    • No more than 1.0 credits from senior undergraduate engineering courses;
    • No more than 1.0 credits from outside engineering; and
    • A minimum of 3.5 credits from engineering (including the Final Project Course).

At least 2.5 credits of coursework must be field-specific (see the M.Eng. section of the School of Engineering website for lists of courses). Remaining credits should be chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor. For the final project course, one member of the graduate faculty will be nominated through discussion between the student and potential advisor(s) and approved by the Associate Director, Graduate Studies as the advisor.
