Welcome to Our New Department Chair

The Department of FARE would like to extend a warm welcome to their new Chair, Dr. Alan P. Ker and his family.  Dr. Ker started his new position on April 30th, 2009.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Alfons Weersink as Acting Chair for his dedicated service over the past 16 months.

On Friday, February 27th, Dr. Lars Brink (CAES President), will present the next seminar scheduled as part of FARE's Seminar Series. 

STEWART LANE COMMEMORATIVE LECTURESHIP

Professor Michael Boehlje of Purdue University will present the Stewart Lane Commemorative Lectureship on Friday, Jan. 30th at 3:00 p.m. in OVC 1715. The title of his presentation is "Innovation in the Agricultural Industries: A Complex Adaptive System". All are welcome to attend this event.

WINTER 2009 SEMINAR SCHEDULE

The first seminar to be offered by the Dept. of FARE in 2009 will be presented by Dr. Timothy Beatty on Monday, January 19th at 2:30 pm.

KENNETH R. FARRELL DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC POLICY LECTURESHIP

Professor Scott Irwin will present "Angel or Devil?  The Role of Speculation in the Recent Commodity Price Boom", Wednesday, Nov. 19/08, 5:30-6:30 pm., Lifetime Learning Centre, OVC 1714, University of Guelph. 

FARE Welcomes David Hope

We are pleased to announce that Dave Hope, assistant deputy minister of the Regulated Marketing Division, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, has been appointed as Senior Fellow of Agricultural Policy in OAC’s department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics. Effective October 1, Dave will assume a variety of duties that will further enhance the relationship between agricultural economics research and policy initiatives for agriculture and rural initiatives in Ontario.

Canadian Agricultural Economics Society Graduate Student Awards Announced at the CAES Annual Meeting in Quebec City, July 1/08

Guelph students swept the MSc and PhD thesis awards at the CAES meetings in Quebec City. Predrag Rajsic and Kate Tsiplova were co-recipients of the best MSc thesis award for 2007 and Richard Vyn won the PhD thesis award for 2005-2007. Congratulations Predrag, Kate and Richard!

Special Welcome to Visiting Researcher

Chatura J.R. Pulasinghage has joined the Dept. of FARE as a Visiting Researcher for the period April 1 through July 31, 2008. Chatura is participating in research with Prof. Brady Deaton examining the issue of property rights in the context of Sri Lanka. His office is located in Room 009 of the J.D. MacLachlan Bldg.
