A research initiative led by Economics Historian Prof. Kris Inwood was featured in two newspaper articles in the Vancouver Sun this week.

The College of Management and Economics, with significant help from the College of Management and Economics Student Association (CMESA), recently completed a successful campaign to raise awareness about the importance of course evaluations and provide students with an opportunity to complete them. Approximately 200 students participated in the campaign and had their names entered in to a draw for an iPad 2.   The lucky winner was BComm (Accounting) student Monica Bassilious.

CME hosted the first annual CME Trading Simulation competition on Saturday, April 2. The event was a huge success. Twenty-nine teams took part from eight different universities. The competition was created to provide students with the opportunity to compete in a daylong trading simulation, gain valuable experience, and network with industry professionals.   The students were joined by faculty members, as well as a few recruiters, an executive member from Burgundy Asset Management and the CGAs.

Marketing and Consumer Studies Professor Brent McKenzie, an expert on the retail and service sectors of the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, recently visited Tallinn, the capital of Estonia.  He comments on the controversial role of Soviet-period themed tourism in Tallinn in the Guelph Mercury.  Read full article

For five days, five CME students lived outside, braving the winter weather to raise awareness and money for the homeless. More than 20 universities participated in 5 Days for the Homeless, a nationwide campaign to raise $200,000 for local charities.

From March 13 to 18, the students lived in a cardboard shelter in Branion Plaza with no food, money or access to showers. They relied on the kindness of strangers, who donated meals. They were also required to stay on campus and attend all of their classes, extracurricular activities and work.

As an undergraduate academic advisor, Prof. Jane Londerville always has a sympathetic ear and kind words for students who come to her with academic or personal problems. Her ability to listen and empathize with students earned her the 2011 Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising Medallion from the Council on Undergraduate Academic Advising.

Course evaluations matter to our College. They matter so much that the College is giving away an iPad 2 to a lucky CME student who completes his or her evaluations! Over the last few years, response rates for online course evaluations have been dwindling.
