Membership of Examination Committee- IO

The Final Oral Examination Committee will consist of four members:

  1. Defense Administrator (a faculty member who manages the defense process)
  2. I-0 Area Examiner (called the “Examination Chair” on departmental paperwork), and
  3. Two Advisory Committee Examiners

1. Defense Administrator

The Department Chair, on behalf of the Dean of Graduate Studies, appoints the Defense Administrator typically following the recommendation of the I-O Area Graduate Studies representative (see “Creation of MA Examination Committee” above). This individual must belong to the Graduate Faculty and must not be a member of the Advisory Committee.

*Note* In the I/O area, the Defense Administrator is not a voting member of the committee

Responsibilities

scheduling the examination
communicating with MA Examination Committee and student
conducting the examination
ensuring that procedures are followed

2. I-O Area Examiner

The typical criteria for this examiner are that he/she is a Member of the University of Guelph I-O Area and not a member of the MA Advisory Committee.

3. Advisor Committee Examiners

Two members of the Advisory Committee become part of the Examination Committee. The Advisory Committee decides which members will join the Examination Committee. The candidate’s Advisor may be one of the two members that join the Examination Committee. If the Advisor does not join the Examination Committee, the Advisor should be present (in a non-voting capacity) during the Examination Committee’s deliberations following the MA Thesis Examination.
