Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) Graduate Level
Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) at the University of Guelph is supported by faculty of 18 Latin American specialists who could direct your research.
These interdisciplinary studies are bilingual; students may submit their work for their courses or for their research projects in either Spanish or English.
Latin American and Caribbean Studies can be taken at the MA and at the PhD levels in the following two forms:
1. Latin American & Caribbean Studies as a field within Integrated Humanities MA, housed in School of Languages and Literatures (SOLAL).
2. Latin America & Caribbean Studies Collaborative Specialization at the MA or PhD levels in collaboration with the following programs:
- English (MA),
- Literary Studies/Theatre Studies in English (PhD),
- Political Science (MA and PhD),
- Public Issues Anthropology (MA),
- Rural Studies (PhD),
- Social Practice and Transformational Change (PhD),
- Sociology (MA and PhD).

- Combine Latin American and Caribbean Studies with International Development and receive our Collaborative LACS/IDEV MA. https://gids.uoguelph.ca/future-students/collaborative-specialization-ids, or Latin American and Caribbean Studies with Sexualities, Genders and Bodies and complete a Collaborative Specialization in the two programs: https://www.uoguelph.ca/arts/SGB.
- Pursue a wide range of research topics with over 20 internationally renowned faculty members associated with the LACS program at the University of Guelph.
- Open doors to careers in Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), international relations, coffee trade, teaching, food and agriculture, indigenous relations, culture and music industry. And pursue any job that requires critical thinking, good research and writing skills, as well as leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Research and write your project of interest in either English or in Spanish.
- Obtain significant training and experience in teaching recognized with a teaching certificate.
Complete the program in 3 semesters.
