COESP Biology Education Exchange

The Biology Education Exchange (BEE) offers a space for timely conversations and casual exchange of ideas amongst the CBS teaching community. BEE is organized and facilitated by CBS instructors for others in CBS who are involved in teaching. This semester, BEE is offering several opportunities to engage with fellow instructors about the ongoing challenges associated with increasing enrolment and reduced resources. One Health Seminar Series: Common ground conservation: Can One Health approaches reverse the loss of biodiversity?

Canada is one of 196 countries committed to reversing the loss of nature through the Global Biodiversity Framework. Implementing the framework to solve complex challenges will require innovative solutions, new approaches, and unexpected alliances. Conservation scientist Dan Kraus will share insights into the current state of nature conservation in Canada, including the country’s new 2030 Nature Strategy.

CBS Three Minute Thesis (3MT) College Heat

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a university-wide competition for graduate students with an exciting challenge: to explain your thesis in a clear and engaging way, using only one slide, and in only three minutes! Both the winner and runner up of the CBS heat will receive prizes ($250 and $150 gift cards, respectively) and move on to the University of Guelph final on April 24, 2025. The winner of the university-wide competition will receive a $1,000 prize towards their tuition and will go on to the provincial final held May 15 at the University of Toronto.

HHNS Seminar: Using exercise and nutritional supplements to promote brain health across the lifespan

Dr. Jeremy Walsh is an assistant professor of kinesiology in the Faculty of Science at McMaster University. His research focuses on characterizing the physiological mechanisms underlying the cognitive enhancing effects of exercise and exogenous ketone supplementation in humans. His work explores the effects of these interventions on cerebral blood flow, BDNF, and cognition in cognitively normal adults and adults with elevated dementia risk.

Documentary Screening: Butterflies on the Brink

Butterflies on the Brink: The Story of the Mottled Duskywing tells the story of a University of Guelph project to reintroduce an endangered butterfly. The documentary follows the research and recovery team, led Dr. Ryan Norris from the Department of Integrative Biology and biologist Jessica Linton, with support from the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory team, as they work to reintroduce the mottled duskywing butterfly to Pinery Provincial Park.
