Current Reserach:

My thesis topic is investigating the impact of the proposed mandatory Front-of-Package nutrition warning labels on consumer demand for prepackaged foods. We are lucky to be able to conduct our research in a Grocery Lab here on campus. The lab mimics a real grocery store and consumers are able to shop normally while wearing eye-tracking glasses. Obesity costs Canadian taxpayers an estimated $6.7 billion dollars a year in direct healthcare expenditures with spillover healthcare expenditures of $26.6 annually. Roughly two-thirds of Canadians are overweight or obese. Scientific evidence has pointed to diets high in sugar, sodium, and/or saturated fats as contributors to obesity. The proposed labels would indicate to consumers that certain pre-packaged foods have 15% or more of their daily value of the specified nutrients per serving. Our lab will be able to identify if consumers notice the labels and if they shift their consumption to a healthy basket of foods as a result. We will have a control and treatment group so we can compare their grocery shopping and survey results. Some of the indicators that I will measure are numeracy skills, health and nutrition knowledge, socio-economic and health indicators, as well as food security status. Measuring these indicators will enable me to test whether different population groups, specifically those most likely to be obese, respond differently to the label. My results have the potential to directly influence policy as the issue of front-of-package nutrition labels has become an election issue. My goal is to conduct the best possible experiment to inform policy makers about the impact of nutrition warning labels—no matter the result.
