University of Guelph students headed downtown Guelph earlier this month for OWN IT, an evening of inspiration and a panel discussion with local female entrepreneurs on the fears, successes and future visions of starting a small business.

The event was co-hosted by the on-campus group Guelph Women in Leadership (GWIL) the Modern Bride, a bridal boutique located in downtown Guelph. The event aimed to inspire aspiring female entrepreneurs to take the next step toward their small business or ideas.

The Accounting Society of Guelph (ASG) hosted their annual Crack the Case competition earlier this month, welcoming over 45 U of G business students to compete for cash prizes.

The annual competition features both a junior and senior accounting case competition, available for all U of G business students, that aims to create a competitive environment that requires teams to compete and perform under pressure. Teams are required to apply the accounting theories learned in class to real life situations.

Last month, University of Guelph students had the chance to learn more about the sports business industry and network with several professionals in the industry at the second annual networking event, Networking Night: a career in sports business.

The event was hosted by the Guelph Sports Management Association and offered the chance for all students with an interest in the sports industry to attend and network with industry professionals.

Over the month of February, University of Guelph Bachelor of Commerce students will be running workshops that will spark conversation around gender equity, equality and stereotypes on campus and beyond.

Led by students from assistant professor Kathleen Rodenburg’s leadership class, the workshops aim to support the UN’s HeForShe gender solidarity campaign. The students will be visiting various groups of students on campus, including engineering, business and the Gryphons Football team, to discuss how they can help break gender stereotypes and improve gender equality.

On February 7, the University of Guelph’s College of Business and Economics recognized the college’s top academic students at the annual Dean’s Scholarship luncheon.

The Dean’s Scholarship, which recognizes the top academic students from across the College, was awarded to 26 undergraduate business students. Award recipients were invited to the Dean’s Scholarship Luncheon to recognize and celebrate their accomplishments.

University of Guelph business professor Marion Joppe was in Victoria, BC last month as a co-chair for the 2019 IMPACT Sustainability Travel and Tourism conference.

The second annual conference was a collaborative national dialogue that focused on the tourism industry and its impact on Canada’s economic, social, environmental and cultural fabric, and on its contribution to Canada’s sustainable future.

Faculty and graduate students from across the College of Business and Economics came together yesterday for the third instalment of the CBE Research Colloquium series, featuring a panel discussion on what research with impact – a strategic pillar of the College - means for researchers.

SSHRC supports postsecondary-based research, research training and knowledge mobilization in the social sciences and humanities. This SSHRC Spotlight series features U of G researchers in the College of Business and Economics who have received SSHRC funding this year.
