Details

The Rural Policy Learning Commons is hosting a free online webinar titled, "Exploring Lived Experiences of LGBTQ People Utilizing Healthcare Services in Rural Manitoba” on January 13, 2020 from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT. The webinar will feature Nadine Henriquez and Nora Ahmad of Brandon University. A brief description of the webinar is listed below:

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning (LGBTQ) people experience significant health inequities with well-documented negative health impacts due to their status as a sexual and gender minority population.  The presence of insensitive, negative or discriminatory attitudes towards LGBTQ people within the healthcare system has continued to negatively impact both access to health services and the overall health and wellbeing of this at risk population. The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of LGBTQ people utilizing healthcare services in Manitoba.  This study helps to identify gaps in healthcare services for LGBTQ persons, areas of healthcare provision lacking cultural competency and inclusiveness, and barriers to accessing health care.  By involving members of the LGBTQ community, this study provides an improved understanding of the unique health needs and experiences of LGBTQ persons in Manitoba as well as future considerations regarding healthcare education, and policies.

The webinar is free to attend, however, registration is required. The School of Environmental Design and Rural Planning is a collaborator in the Rural Policy Learning Commons.
