SEDRD is proud to announce that Dr. Nasir Khan has been awarded Canada’s prestigious Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship in the 2022-23 competition, worth $70,000 a year, for two years, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The School of Environmental Design and Rural Development will host its second Banting fellow out of five SSHRC Banting fellows that the University received over the last decade.

Dr. Khan will work with his current adviser, Dr. Ataharul Chowdhury, during the fellowship tenure. Dr. Khan’s proposed work focuses on how vulnerability to climate change impacts food security, prosperity and resilience of a landless and socially marginalized lower-status social class in rural Pakistan. Dr. Khan intends to investigate this issue in the context of the growing challenges of climate misinformation. This project aims to provide recommendations for improving the resilience of socially marginalized rural castes against growing risks of climate change and induced disasters. To this end, Dr. Khan plans to use a mixed-method research approach, combining econometric models and qualitative methods to investigate the research objectives.
