Welcome, Dr. Scott Metzger!

Posted on Tuesday, September 8th, 2026

Dr. Scott Metzger will be joining the department as post-doctoral fellow from September 2026-August 2027. Dr. Metzger specializes in the history of 19th and 20th century philosophy, especially pragmatism, semiotics, and early analytic philosophy. Dr. Metzger received his PhD in Philosophy at McMaster University in 2024 and has since been conducting research as a SSHRC post-doctoral fellow at University of Toronto. Dr. Metzger’s postdoctoral fellowship at Guelph is funded by the SSHRC Extending New Narratives in the History of Philosophy partnership grant (Dr. Sheridan is a Co-investigator on this grant and Guelph is a partnering institution).

Dr. Metzger’s  research under this grant will focus on four women philosophers of the early analytic period: Victoria Welby, Margaret Macdonald, Elsie Whetnall, and Susanne Langer, who contributed to debates concerning the meaning of meaning in the early 20th century. Dr. Metzger’s research will provide the groundwork for a monograph on these four understudied women philosophers, thereby shining a light on the contributions of women to the debates of the period.
