2018 Alumni Awards - Call for nominations

Nominations now open for 2018 CBE Alumni Awards

University of Guelph business and economics alumni are making a difference in workplaces and communities across Canada and around the world. In an effort to recognize these exceptional individuals, the College of Business and Economics is reaching out to alumni to nominate U of G business alumni for a Notable Alumni Award or the 10x10 Alumni with Impact Award.

These prestigious awards represent the highest level of recognition the College gives to its alumni, and nominations for the 2018 awards are now open.

Economics and finance students learn first-hand from prominent industry leaders

U of G economics and finance students go beyond the textbooks each semester, learning from the first-hand experiences of prominent financial and investment leaders.

Economics professor Francis Tapon has always stressed the importance of engaging with industry leaders. In an effort to connect student learning with real-world concepts, his ECON3660 and 6820 classes benefit from a “who’s who” of guest speakers of the finance industry throughout the semester.

Improve Life Challenge 2018

Normally, if you tell a Guelph student they’re going to be stuck in the Science Complex all weekend, perhaps even into the night, they are apprehensive to say the least. During the Improve Life Challenge, though, they jump at the chance to band together with other students, community partners, and mentors to solve some of the world’s biggest problems.

U of G HFTM students win national hotel competition

U of G business students are national champions after winning the 2018 HotelNext Canada competition in downtown Toronto on April 24th.

The competition gives Canadian University students a chance to showcase their inspiring designs on an under-performing hotel. Students chose a market, reviewed operating history, made renovation recommendations and presented a capital plan.

1st year BComm student moves on to the finals in a prestigious sales competition

In only the first year of her Bachelor of Commerce program, Tanya Broschinski successfully competed against over 3,600 students to move on to the finals at the Great Canadian Sales Competition (GCSC). The final round includes 25 finalists and takes place on May 3rd at the Google Headquarters. The top prize is $7,500.

The GCSC is an opportunity for students to develop real world business and sales skills, learn more about established companies and network with potential employers. The competition has over 80 school partners across 10 provinces.

CBE graduates awarded best paper in Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences

Two U of G marketing and consumer studies graduates were awarded Best Paper published in 2017 in the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences (CJAS) for their article on successful brand community.

The paper – The impact of sense of duty on brand community outcomes – focuses on what markers are essential for successful brand community, and how to validate the role of sense of duty toward the community. From a marketing perspective, this is important in order to understand the marketing levers that influence favourable behavioural outcomes.

U of G business alumnus makes Top 30 Under 30 list

Congratulations to U of G business alumnus Sid Grover on making the Ontario Hostelry Institute’s Top 30 Under 30!

The Top 30 Under 30 recipients are chosen based on their success in their current roles, as well as what each one brings to the industry through leadership opportunities, community involvement, industry development and/or mentoring.

Dan Hogan

MA Leadership alumnus learns to step outside of his comfort zone by leveraging teamwork and trust

After being away from school for 19 years, Dan Hogan enrolled in the MA Leadership program excited to pursue professional development. Towards the end, he graduated from the program with the confidence he needed in order to take risks and accept a new management position in healthcare. Now managing a team of 250 frontline healthcare professionals, Dan continues to see the importance of teamwork and continues to use the leadership strategies that he learned throughout the program.
