The Acronym Dictionary is a tool for all members of the University of Guelph community to use in determining the correct meaning of acronyms used at the University of Guelph.

The Advanced Analysis Centre at the University of Guelph is a group of research laboratories housed in the SSC.
AAC (a-a-c)
The ARC Advisory Council offered strategic direction for the advancement of the Aboriginal Resource Centre (ARC) mission. See ISC for the Indigenous Student Centre.
AAC (a-a-c)
The Athletics Advisory Council is advisory to the University President and the Director of Athletics on policy matters dealing with the athletics program, and use of University athletics facilities. Membership includes 11 student members, 4 University staff members, and ex-officio members (that are non-voting).
AAD
Alumni Affairs and Development is the name of the department responsible for both friend and fundraising at the University.
ABC (a-b-c)
Awareness, Balance, Choice is an alcohol education program run by a committee of staff and students that promotes responsible drinking across campus. It is located on the 2nd floor of the J.T. Powell Building in the Wellness Centre and Promotion Centre. Visit the Wellness Centre and Promotion Centre website or reach them by phone at 519-824-4120 extension 53327.
ABIO

AC
The W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre (at the east end of Reynolds Walk) houses fitness facilities in addition to the Department of Athletics’ administrative offices.
ACCT
Accounting is a Specialization offered at the undergraduate level. Refer to Section X--Degree Programs in the current Undergraduate Calendar for more information.
ACMHW
The Advisory Committee on Mental Health and Wellness is co-chaired by the Associate Vice-President (Academic) and Associate Vice-President (Student Affairs). It was created in 2014 and is charged with playing a leading role in evaluating mental health priorities at Guelph, identifying programs and assessing outcomes, and determining opportunities for collaboration within and outside of the university.
ADA
Associate Dean (Academic) is a title of a role in each Dean's Office. The names and contact information for ADA incumbents are included in the Associate Deans and Assistant Deans List.
AGG
Art Gallery of Guelph, located on the north-east corner of the intersection of College Avenue and Gordon Street.
AGR

AGRO
The Agronomy Building is located on the Ridgetown Campus in Ridgetown, Ontario (see the Ridgetown Campus map at for location).
AHL
AHN
Applied Human Nutrition is a Specialization offered at the undergraduate level. Refer to Section X--Degree Programs in the current Undergraduate Calendar for more information.
ALC
Academic Learning Community refers to residence communities comprised of first-year students in the same academic program. Each cluster is led by an upper-year student from the same academic program that is employed by Student Housing Services. Learn more about Academic Learning Communities.
ALEX
Alexander Hall is on Gordon Street on the south side of Reynolds Walk. Formally called the Axelrod Building, it was renamed to honour Chancellor Emeritus Lincoln Alexander.
Alfred
Campus d'Alfred was the University's Eastern Ontario campus that delivered Associate Diploma programs in the French language until 2015.
Alumni House
Alumni House is a board and batten, timber-framed structure that is located on Arboretum Road next to the CCLC. It was built in 1879 as a carriage house for the principal of the OAC. It was moved from a central campus location in 1930 and became an office building in 1978. It houses AAD.
Alumni Stadium
Alumni Stadium is the name of the football stadium and outdoor running track facility. It is located between Powerhouse Lane and East Ring Road at College Avenue East.
ANCC
OVC Animal Cancer Centre houses the Institute for Comparative Cancer Investigation (ICCI).
ANNEX
A storage facility for infrequently used TUG resources that can be accessed by students. To access students make a request for delivery to an on-campus library location through TRELLIS or at the Library service desk.
ANNU (ann-ew)
Animal Science and Nutrition is located at the west end of Reynolds Walk on the west side of Gordon Street. It is home to the Departments of Animal Bioscience and Human Health Sciences.
ANSC

ANTH
Anthropology is a Specialization offered at the undergraduate level. Refer to Section X--Degree Programs in the current Undergraduate Calendar for more information.
ARB
The Arboretum Centre is located at the east side of the Arboretum and is accessible either by walking through the Arboretum from the east end of Arboretum Road (by the Soccer Complex) or by car from College Avenue, just west of Victoria Road.
ARC
The Aboriginal Resource Centre was the previous name of the Indigenous Student Centre (ISC).
ARTH
Art History is a Specialization offered at the undergraduate level. Refer to Section X--Degree Programs in the current Undergraduate Calendar for more information.
ASO
Accredited Student Organizations are clubs, societies, and councils granted status by a PSO (defined by the Student Organization Policy). The PSO is responsible for the actions of the ASOs they grant standing to and must ensure the ASO complies with all University policies and procedures.
AUCC
Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada was the former name of Universities Canada.
AUP
The Animal Utilization Protocol for the University of Guelph.
AVPA
The Associate Vice-President (Academic) is responsible for the content and administration of all undergraduate programs.
AVPR
The Associate Vice-President (Research) has responsibilities for the University’s diverse and comprehensive research enterprise and acts as the University’s chief research officer.
AVPSA
The Associate Vice-President (Student Affairs) is responsible for student services programs at the University.
AXEL
Axelrod Building is the former/original name of ALEX. It was named for Dr. Herbert Axelrod, an American epidemiologist who donated a world-class collection of museum-quality fossils to the University in 1989.
BA

BAS

The Bachelor of Arts and Science Student Association represents BAS students on different campus committees and advisory boards in addition to organizing social and academic events for BAS students. Visit the BASSA website.

Bounce Back is an optional support program offered for first and second year students who struggled with their academics in their first semester. Learn more about the Bounce Back program.

BGS (b-g-s)
The Board of Graduate Studies considers and reports to Senate on proposals for the establishment of a new program for a graduate degree or diploma, recommends admission standards for appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, makes recommendations on matters of graduate educational policy, recommends University graduate admission requirements, approves candidates for graduate degrees, approves graduate course deletions and additions, and performs other tasks as outlined in the Board of Graduate Studies bylaws.

Blue Poles
The name given to the outdoor Emergency Call Stations on campus. Each station has a blue light on top, is easily spotted from a distance and features a large red button which, when pushed, establishes two-way communication with the Police Dispatcher who can identify its location.

OVC Biomedical Science is a building on campus that is part of the Ontario Veterinary College.
BMPH

Bob's Dogs
A hotdog cart vendor located on the patio of the Bullring year-round that reportedly offers the best hotdogs in Guelph, served by a man who many feel is one of the friendliest guys around.
BoG (bog)
The Board of Governors is responsible to oversee the government, conduct, management and control of the University and its property, revenues, expenditures, business and affairs. Information about BoG is available on the University Secretariat website.

The Board of Trustees overseas the Heritage Trust on behalf of the Board of Governors.
BPCH

Branion Plaza
This is the name of the outdoor area between the UC, MACN, ZAV and Raithby House. The cannon is found here as is a seating area during the warmer weather.
Brass Taps
Brass Taps is the formal name for The Keg campus bar/lounge located on UC Level 2.

BUGS (bugs)
The Board of Undergraduate Studies makes recommendations to Senate on matters of undergraduate degree educational policy, is concerned with academic standards and planning for undergraduate degree programs, recommends to Senate the establishment or elimination of undergraduate degree or diploma programs, approves changes in undergraduate degree programs, recommends admission requirements for undergraduate degree programs, and performs other tasks as outlined in the Board of Undergraduate Studies bylaws.
Bullring
A circular building located between Day Hall and Raithby House inside which livestock used to be shown. The building houses a campus living room and eatery run by the CSA also known as the Bullring or the Ring.
BUS

BWH (black-wood hall)
Blackwood Hall is located on Trent Lane behind the MacKinnon Building and is the home of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.

CAF
Central Animal Facility is a centre for the maintenance, by skilled and experienced personnel, of quality animals in a controlled environment as a service to departments across the University.
Campus Co-op
The Guelph Campus Cooperative was started in 1913 by students wishing to organize their own buying power. The Co-op runs the Co-op Bookstore and Guelph Campus Co-op Housing.
Cannon
The cannon is a British naval gun, rumoured to have been used in the War of 1812. Its name is “Old Jeremiah” and it is located in Branion Plaza, in front of Raithby House and across from the UC. It is a long-standing Guelph tradition for students to paint the cannon with messages in order to promote events and organizations.

The College of Arts Student Union ensures that students in COA have a voice in the decision-making of the university. It also provides social interaction through clubs and events. They can be reached by email at casu@uoguelph.ca.

Child Care and Learning Services is a child care and teaching facility that is located on Arboretum Road at East Ring Road. It provides child care to student and non-student families while providing a learning opportunity for academically qualified students.

CCT
The Co-Curricular Transcript is an official record of an eligible student’s involvement in verified student activities that have occurred outside the classroom. It was originally piloted at Guelph in 2010-2011.
CECS
Cooperative Education and Career Services is the former name of the Experiential Learning Hub of the Student Experience Department.
CENG

CEPS (ceps)
The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences is a former college that was transitioned into two new colleges, the College of Engineering (CoE) and the College of Computational, Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CCMPS), effective July 1, 2025.
CFC
The Compulsory Fees Committee, formerly known as the Student Services Fee Committee, is comprised of faculty, staff and students, who oversee University compulsory non-tuition fees and the various services supported by them.

CFRU is the campus-based radio station 93.3FM.
CFS (c-f-s)
The Canadian Federation of Students is the national voice for students, representing over 400,000 students across Canada. The CFS lobbies for changes aimed at making post-secondary education more accessible to all students. All University of Guelph students are members of this organization.

College Governments are attached to each of U of G's eight Colleges and, through their elected student members, represent student interests to various administrative bodies at the University.
College Governments
There are eight colleges at the University of Guelph: COA, CBS, Lang, CCMPS, CoE, CSAHS, OAC and OVC. Every college has a student government attached to it that is run by a group of students who are elected each year by the student body (much like a Student Council in high school).
Co-op
A short form used most often to refer to either the Guelph Campus Cooperative or a specialization within a degree program that offers a Cooperative Education option, alternating school and work term semesters.
Co-op Bookstore
The Guelph Campus Co-op Bookstore is located in the north end of the basement of Johnston Hall and is both owned and operated by students.
COU (c-o-u)
Council of Ontario Universities is a membership organization of Ontario’s 20 publicly funded universities and the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC). COU facilitates discussion between members institutions and and advocates on a wide range of university issues as well as co-ordinates a number of shared services for members.
Courselink
Courselink is a software program which assists with course administration, acts as a grades book tool, and allows for the setup of course functions such as online quizzes and conferencing.
Cow Path
This is the name given to the stone path which runs along side the Dairy Bush and that leads from the west end of Reynolds Walk (on the west side of Gordon Street) to Edinburgh Road.

CR
College Royal is a student-run and student-coordinated open house that occurs annually (mid-March) and encompasses the entire University of Guelph campus. College Royal attracts over 30,000 visitors every year and involves the coordination of over 3000 student volunteers.

The Curriculum Review Committee is a sub-committee of BUGS.
Creelman Marketplace
A large dining hall located in Creelman Hall. It was the first marketplace dining concept to be created in a North American university.
CRLM
Creelman Hall is a large stone building located on Winegard Walk at the North end of campus at College Avenue, across from Mills Hall. It houses Creelman Marketplace.
CRSC (c-r-s-c)
The Crop Science Building is located on Reynolds Walk beside the Richards Building and houses the Crop Science department.
CS
Counselling Services is located in the Vaccarino Centre for Student Wellness, within the J.T. Powell Building. They offer individual counselling sessions and support groups to help support students as they work through the personal challenges that impair their ability to succeed at school and in other areas of their lives.

The Central Student Association represents all undergraduate students to the federal and provincial governments, the University administration, the Board of Governors, the Senate, City Council and the Guelph Transit Commission.

CTAG (c-tag)
Co-Curricular Transcript Advisory Group is responsible for guidelines related to the co-curricular transcript, an official record of an eligible student’s involvement in verified student activities that have occurred outside the classroom.
CUAA (c-u-a-a)
The Council on Undergraduate Academic Advising develops, reviews, discusses, and recommends to senior administration on an ongoing basis any and all advising-related strategies, policies, and processes.
CUPE (cue-pee)
The Canadian Union of Public Employees is Canada’s largest union. There are three employee groups represented by CUPE at the University of Guelph.

See VAOA as the Veterinary Assistant and Office Administration program (coded as CVAOA).
CVSA (c-v-s-a)
Central Veterinary Student Association represents the interests of OVC students.
DAIR
The Dairy Barn is located at the end of Reynolds Walkway on the west side of Gordon Street, behind Animal and Poultry Science.
DECA
An international student organization that prepares future leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, management, and other professional areas through case competitions and networking events throughout the year. DECA comes from Distributive Education Clubs of America but the association is normally known by the initials DECA. Information is on the DECA website.
Departmental Advising
Specializations (i.e. Major, Minor, Area of Emphasis within a degree program) are normally assigned a Faculty Advisor to assist students in making academic decisions related to the specific area of study. The Faculty Advisor is familiar with academic requirements of the specialization and career opportunities related to the field of study.

Day Hall is located on Winegard Walk next to the Mackinnon Building.
DHR (d - h - r)
The Office of Diversity and Human Rights is dedicated to the removal of all systemic barriers, discrimination and harassment. They can be reached by email at dhrinfo@uoguelph.ca or by phone at 519-824-4120 extension 53000.
Dippers (dip-ers)
A nickname traditionally given to students registered in the two-year associate diploma programs in agriculture and horticulture which are now only offered at the regional campus sites.
Dome, The
See Gryphon Dome, The.
DREW
Drew Hall was built in 1882 as the official residence of the Bursar and now houses offices for Hospitality Services. It is named for the University's first Chancellor, George Alexander Drew who served as mayor of the City of Guelph and went on to become the Ontario Conservative Party leader, Premier of Ontario and Minister of Education and federal Progressive Conservative Party leader.
Drop
One-semester courses can be dropped without academic penalty until the last day of class. Two-semester courses can be dropped until the last day of class of the second semester.
DVM
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is an undergraduate degree program. The DVM website provides information about becoming a veterinarian.
East
East Residence is a student housing building that accommodates students in suites of 8 to 12 people with cooking facilities.
East Village
East Village Townhouses surround the base of East Residence. They include four, five and six bedroom fully self-contained units as well as a Town Hall.
East Walk
Also known as Stadium Walk, this path extends from East Residence to Gordon Street, running between the McKinnon Building and Johnston Hall and along side Johnston Green.
ECB (ed-mund-c-bow-vee)
Edmund C. Bovey Building is on the west side of Gordon Street and it houses the departments of Environmental Biology and Plant Agriculture.
EC
European Cultures is a Specialization offered at the undergraduate level. Refer to Section X--Degree Programs in the current Undergraduate Calendar for more information.
Eccles
The Eccles Centre is an addition to the east side of Maritime Hall that is often used for residence programming, exam study space and meetings.
ECOL

ELH
The Experiential Learning Hub of the Student Experience Department. Staff there facilitate student learning and career development, help produce skilled graduates, and meet employer and labour needs through the offering of programs and resources.

Commonly used as a short form for Engineering.

Johnston Hall is a large stone building with a clock tower, located on Winegard Walk across from Johnston Green at the centre of campus. It was built in 1932 and named after William Johnston who was principal of the Ontario Agricultural College from 1874 to 1879. It is a mixed use building. Its upper floors are a residence hall while its main floor and basement level house a number of office spaces, include the administrative offices of OAC, the School of Continuing Studies and the Co-op Bookstore.

A large grass area that is located on the opposite side of Winegard Walk to Johnston Hall. This is a favourite spot for fun and relaxation.

Reynolds Building is located to the west of Winegard Walk on Stadium Walk and is the home of the School of Computing Science.

A walkway that extends from the J.T. Powell Building, past the UC to the rear of the Animal Science and Nutrition Building on the west side of Gordon Street.

Ridgetown
Ridgetown Campus is a campus of the University in Guelph that delivers Associate Diploma programs.
Ring
A circular building located between Day Hall and Raithby House inside which livestock used to be shown. The building houses a restaurant run by the CSA also known as the Bullring.
ROFR
Right of First Refusal is a term used in the context of teaching postings for sessional instructors.
ROZH (r-o-z-h)
Rozanski Hall consists of four lecture halls (600, 400, 200 and 120 seats) and five classrooms (60, 40 and three 30 seats). It is located in the centre of campus, opposite the Bullring.
RLS (r-l-s)
Residence Life Staff are employed by Student Housing Services. RLS includes Residence Managers (RMs), Resident Assistants (RAs), Programmer RAs, Living Learning Centre Staff and Academic Learning Community staff.
RM (r-m)
A Residence Manager is a full-time employee in the Residence Life Staff of Student Housing Services. The RM is responsible for the co-ordination of discipline, support and general programming in a residence as the immediate supervisor of the residences RA staff.
SA
Student Ambassador is a role on each of Guelph's campus' that allows students to develop leadership skills while representing the campus by helping at events and promoting programs to prospective students.
Safewalk
A volunteer service coordinated by the CSA that provides students with accompaniment for evening and late night walks on campus. Call 519-824-4120 extension 53200.

The SAM Program enhances the academic performance of student-athletes by providing resources and assistance tailored to their unique needs.

Windows Cafe is a bistro-type food service outlet located in Mountain Hall, on the north side of South Ring Road, within the South Residence complex.
Winegard Walk (wine-guard)
The name of a red brick walkway that runs through the centre of campus and extends from South Ring Road at the south end of campus to College Avenue at the north end of campus. It is named after former President William “Bill” Winegard who served as the University's second president and vice-chancellor from 1967 to 1975.
WinMarks (win-marks)
A grades book tool developed at the University of Guelph.
WMEM
War Memorial Hall is located on the corner of College Avenue and Gordon Street. It opened in 1924 as a memorial to the college men who died in World War I. It includes a Memorial Chapel that houses bronze tablets that bear the names of the College men who passed away in the first and second world wars.
