Mining Local Food in Northern Ontario

Posted on Friday, June 5th, 2015

Dr. Wayne Caldwell will be leading a new research project exploring the challenges northern Ontario faces regarding access to locally grown food. This study, funded through the University of Guelph / OMAFRA Partnership Agreement seeks to understand the role of producers and distributors within local food networks and the impacts of such networks on food sovereignty/security for northern Ontario communities. Producers, including new migrant farmers from the Anabaptist community, will provide insight regarding the challenges farmers face, their impact on local food and role within a local food network. This research will provide best practices to support new farmers, expand local food networks and increase access to locally grown food for northern Ontario communities.
