Congratulations to Margot Kopache, a third-year master of landscape architecture student who was awarded the Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation (LACF) 2023 Frederick Gage Todd National Scholarship.

This highly competitive national scholarship recognizes one Canadian landscape architecture student each year who demonstrates exceptional knowledge, skill and commitment directed to the advancement of Canadian landscapes through the practice of landscape architecture. The award comes with a $10,000 prize, and Margot is the first University of Guelph student to win this award, which was inaugurated in 2021.

The LACF Jury had the following comments:

“Margot outlined her passion for landscape architecture through a very well-developed approach. Jury members felt that her approach was ‘hands-on’ and ‘down to earth’ while communicating a clear and ambitious ‘vision.’ Margot's personal statement revealed her diverse areas of interest in nature, art, science and discussed how landscape architecture can play a role in engaging and repairing the damaged relationship between people and the environment.

"Margot proposes community-based actions and the use (and reuse) of available resources, including what are considered "waste materials.” Her ideas and focus on community responsibility are inspiring and offer an optimistic view into the future and our profession’s role in bettering the world. Margot's application was supported by a very enthusiastic letter of reference, which affirms the applicant’s commitment to her chosen profession. “
