Rethinking the Religious/Non-Religious Divide

In an age im
bued with the renewed public hostility toward
religion engendered by its c
ultural despisers, from the eloquent tirades
of Christopher Hitchens to t
he calculated denunciations of Richard
Dawkins, the question of what cons
titutes religion in the first place is
of magnified importance. Drawing fr
om 20th-century existentialist
thought, I re-examine the divide between r
eligious and non-religious
forms of experience. I argue that this divide i
s not a radical one and
that we must rethink its use.
