degree requirements

The Department offers three Bachelor of Arts in History program streams:

  • Major in History in your BA Honours

  • Minor in History in your BA Honours

  • Area of Concentration in History in your BA General

The program requirements are detailed in the undergraduate calendar. (If you started your degree before F19, follow the requirements from the year you entered. Calendars for previous years are listed on the Registrar's website.)

History (HIST)
Department of History, College of Arts

Courses marked (H) are designed as honours courses.

Access to all 4000 level history courses is restricted to students in the BA Honours program who have completed at least 10.00 university credits and who have achieved at least a 70% average in all history course attempts. Students in a general program wishing to take these courses must obtain the permission of instructors concerned. Students wishing to take a 3000-level course must have completed at least 7.50 credits in university courses.

Students wishing to take a 2000-level course must have completed at least 2.00 credits in university courses. The History Department advises students entering semester 2 who wish to take a 2000-level course to enroll in one of the core courses (HIST*2100 Histories of Canada to 1867, HIST*2450 The Practising Historian and HIST*2600 Histories of Canada Since 1867) that offer additional instructional support. Students should note the prerequisite requirements of upper level courses in planning their individual programs.


Core Requirements (2.00 credits) 

Required in History Major, Minor and Area of Concentration Studies

Plus one of:

  • HIST*2100 [0.50] Histories of Canada to 1867
  • HIST*2600 [0.50] Histories of Canada Since 1867
While not required to do so, students are advised to take both HIST*2100 and HIST*2600.

Major (Honours Program)

A minimum of 8.50 credits in History courses is required as follows:

  • Core Requirements - 2.00 credits (see list above)

  • Plus 6.50 credits of History Electives1 including

    • 2.00 credits at the 4000-level

    • 4.50 additional credits in History

  • 1History electives must be chosen to ensure 0.5 credits are completed in each of the following fields: Premodern History and Global History. For current list, refer to: History Degree Requirements

Note: Honours students in History may, with the permission of the department, take up to 1.00 credits from outside the department such asECON*2420ECON*3730EURO*4050. Students considering graduate work are advised to take 2.00 - 3.00 additional upper level History credits perhaps including the Special History Project Seminar (HIST*4470,HIST*4970) and to acquire a reading knowledge of a foreign language. 

 


Minor (Honours Program)

A minimum of 5.00 credits in History is required as follows:

  • Core Requirements - 2.00 credits (see list above)

  • Plus 3.00 credits of History Electives1 including

    • 1.00 credits at the 3000- or 4000-level

    • 2.00 additional credits in History

  • 1History electives must be chosen to ensure 0.5 credits are completed in each of the following fields: Premodern History and Global History. For current list, refer to: History Degree Requirements


Area of Concentration (General Program)

A minimum of 5.00 credits in History is required as follows:

  • Core Requirements - 2.00 credits (see list above)

  • Plus 3.00 credits of History Electives1 including

    • 1.50 credits at the 3000-level

    • 1.50 additional credits in History

  • 1History electives must be chosen to ensure 0.5 credits are completed in each of the following fields: Premodern History and Global History. For current list, refer to: History Degree Requirements


COURSE LISTS

Some courses are listed under more than one category. Such courses can fill only one of these requirements and cannot be double counted. With departmental approval, courses in areas such as Classics, Economics, Women’s Studies, European Studies and some in other departments/programs may be used to satisfy this requirement.

a) Pre-Modern courses: Requirement is 0.50 credits from this list. Pre-Modern courses are those having a major emphasis on the period before c1500.

b) Global World courses: Requirement is 0.50 credits from this list. Global World topics are defined as those areas outside the North Atlantic geographic region.

Note: With the permission of the department, students may select as part of their program 0.50 credits outside the History Department such as ECON*2420ECON*3730EURO*4050.
