The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines is an advanced level certification is designed to give a more comprehensive coverage of the wines of the world.  Students will benefit from in-depth high-quality tastings and detailed understanding of grape growing and wine making.  You will be able to assess wines accurately and use your understanding to confidently explain wine style and quality.

This qualification is suitable for employees in the trade, supervisory, management or those required to respond professionally to consumer queries.  This course is also ideal for the wine enthusiast wanting to build on knowledge gained in Level 2.

Level 3 is highly regarded by employers.  Upon successful completion, you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

IMPORTANT *The WSET recommends that students allocate a minimum of 84 hours of study time, (32.5 hours of classroom time, including the 2.5 hour examination AND 51.5 hours of private study).

WHEN

Level 3 will be offered over 14 weeks on Monday evenings from 7 - 9:30 p.m. on the following dates in 2024.

  • February 5, 12, 19 (No Class Family Day), 26
  • March 4, 11, 18, 25
  • April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
  • May 6, 13 (Exam Day - You must be present this day).

QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW

Our passionate wine professional, Melissa Pulvermacher will teach and guide you through the units and learning outcomes. You will gain in-depth knowledge of the following:

UNIT 1

Learning Outcome 1

  • Identify the principal natural and human factors in the vineyard and winery that are involved in the production of still wines of the world.
  • Describe how they can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.

Learning Outcome 2

  • Identify and describe the characteristics of the still wines produced in the principal wine producing regions of the world.
  • Describe how the key natural and human factors in the vineyard, winery, law and commerce can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.

Learning Outcome 3

  • Identify and describe the characteristics of the principal sparkling wines of the world.
  • Describe how the key natural and human factors in the vineyard, winery, law and commerce can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.

Learning Outcome 4

  • Identify and describe the characteristics of the principal fortified wines of the world.
  • Describe how the key natural and human factors in the vineyard, winery and law can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.

Learning Outcome 5

  • Demonstrate the ability to provide information and advice to customers and staff about wines.

Unit 2

Learning Outcome 1

  • Accurately describe the key characteristics of the principal still wines of the world and use the description to make an assessment of quality and an assessment of readiness for drinking.

HOW TO GAIN THE QUALIFICATION

To gain the internationally-recognized WSET certification, you must successfully complete a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a short-wrtten paper (Unit 1) AND a blind tasting of two wines (Unit 2). This qualification is regulated by Ofqual.  A 55% pass mark is required on both units.

The exam will take place the last day of class.  You must be present on this scheduled day.

RESTRICTIONS

Participants that are under the age of 19 or those who choose not to taste alcohol for health or religious reasons, will not be allowed to sample any alcoholic beverage as part of the course. Participants will not be eligible to complete the assessment for Unit 2 of the Level 3 Award in Wines. In this case, you will receive a record of achievement on successful completion of Unit 1, but not awarded the Level 3 Award in Wines certification.

FEE

$1,600 + HST ($208) = $1808

Includes: WSET ebook study pack (not a textbook), wines for in-class tasting; instruction and examination fees (for the scheduled class date). You can view/access the eBook for 1 year.

Wine Glasses: Please bring six ISO tasting glasses to each class.  If you require tasting glasses, a $30 charge will apply at registration. Note, this on the application form.

*An $80 discount will apply to U of G alumni, students, staff and faculty. $1,520 + HST ($197.60) = $1,717.60

It is highly recommended that you hold the WSET Level 2 before applying.  If you do not have Level 2, please email Instructor Melissa Pulvermacher prior to submitting your application form.

A team member will contact you for payment details which can be made via VISA, M/C or by cheque.

HST Registration Number - R108161829    This course does not qualify for the Canada Revenue Agency T2202A Education Form.  A University of Guelph receipt can be issued.

CANCELLATION

Once materials have been ordered on January 4th, 2023, no refund will apply.

POLICIES

Reasonable adjustments and accessible learning materials for special education needs and disabilities.

  • Reasonable adjustments need to be approved by WSET in advance. An application form and supporting documentation must be submitted at least four weeks in advance for the course.

Special consideration or disability/accessibility services - You must contact us 4 weeks prior to course start.

  • Information on appeals and reasonable adjustments must be made within 30 days after the examination.

Enquiries against exam results and exam feedback.

  • If a candidate believes that an error may have been made in the grading of papers, they may apply to have an exam paper reviewed and re-marked. An Enquiry is a request to have an exam re-marked. When lodging an Enquiry, a candidate may also request additional Feedback on their exam paper to assist in their preparation for future exams. It is not possible to request Feedback without an Enquiry. Feedback can only be requested on failed elements. If a candidate wishes to use the Enquiry and Feedback service, they must submit the Enquiry and Feedback Form that can be found on the Global Campus. There is a fee for using this service via WSET HQ, which is detailed on the form. We will supply the form to any candidate who requires it. The completed form must be received by WSET within 6 weeks of the exam date. Any request received outside of this timeframe will not be reviewed.
