OVERVIEW

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 2 Award in Wines will be focusing on grape varieties, climatic and winemaking influences, and how these impact the style and quality of wines from key regions.

WHEN

  • Monday's, September 30th - December 2nd, 2024
  • EXAM DATE: Monday, December 2nd 7:00 p.m.  (You must be present on this day)

    This qualification is 9 weeks in length (including exam) and has a minimum requirement of 28 hours of study time (including delivery and personal study and revision).

    A minimum of 15 participants is required to run the course.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  • People employed in the drinks and hospitality industries with little previous knowledge of alcoholic beverages.
  • Wine enthusiasts who wish to acquire in-depth knowledge of wine and want to obtain an internationally recognized wine qualification.

QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW

Students will learn:

  • How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
  • How environmental factors, grape-growing, winemaking and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines made from eight principal grape varieties: Chardonnay; Pinot Grigio/Gris; Sauvignon Blanc; Riesling; Cabernet Sauvignon; Merlot; Pinot Noir; Syrah/Shiraz
  • The style and quality of wines:
    • made from 22 regionally important grape varieties
    • produced in over 70 geographical indications (GIs) around the world
  • How grape varieties and winemaking processes influence key styles of:
    • Sparkling wines
    • Fortified wines
  • Key labelling terms used to indicate origin, style and quality
  • Principles and processes involved in the storage and service of wine
  • Principles of food and wine pairing

Upon completion of the qualification, students will understand why the key wines of the world look, smell and taste as they do.  When encountering a new wine for the first time, students will be able to apply the knowledge gained to make a reasonable judgement of the expected style and quality.

HOW TO GAIN THE QUALIFICATION

You must successfully complete a multiple choice exam of 50 questions. The exam will take place the last day of classes.  All students who pass will be issued an internationally-recognized WSET certificate and a lapel pin.

Please ensure that you are available on the scheduled exam day.

The course is taught in English. Other languages are available for the course book and exam. If interested, please inquire before you register.

FEE 

Note:  We are currently awaiting WSET's 2024/25 Fee schedule for September courses. The course fee will be priced between $990 & $1,090 + HST. 

Includes: an eBook (not a textbook), wines for in-class tasting, wine glasses, wine mat, instruction and examination fees (for the class scheduled date).

A $50 discount will apply to U of G faculty, staff, students and alumni.

PAYMENT INFORMATION

A team member will contact you for payment details which can be made via VISA, M/C or by cheque.

HST Registration Number - R108161829    This course does not qualify for the Canada Revenue Agency T2202A Education Form.  A University of Guelph receipt can be issued.

ANY RESTRICTIONS?

Participants must be 19 years of age by the start date of the course.

Level 1 is not a prerequisite for Level 2.

CANCELLATION

Once materials have been ordered on September 11th, no refund will apply.

POLICIES

Reasonable adjustments and accessible learning materials for special education needs and disabilities.

  • Reasonable adjustments need to be approved by WSET in advance. An application form and supporting documentation must be submitted at least four weeks in advance for the course.

Special consideration or disability/accessibility services - You must contact us 4 weeks prior to course start.

  • Information on appeals and reasonable adjustments must be made within 30 days after the examination.

Enquiries against exam results and exam feedback.

  • If a candidate believes that an error may have been made in the grading of papers, they may apply to have an exam paper reviewed and re-marked. An Enquiry is a request to have an exam re-marked. When lodging an Enquiry, a candidate may also request additional Feedback on their exam paper to assist in their preparation for future exams. It is not possible to request Feedback without an Enquiry. Feedback can only be requested on failed elements. If a candidate wishes to use the Enquiry and Feedback service, they must submit the Enquiry and Feedback Form that can be found on the Global Campus. There is a fee for using this service, which is detailed on the form. We will supply the form to any candidate who requires it. The completed form must be received by WSET within 6 weeks of the exam date. Any request received outside of this timeframe will not be reviewed.
