Established by Monica Rieck, Kevin, Charles & Helen James to honour a beloved family member, born and raised in Germany, in recognition of her kindness, generosity, and resilience, and of the value she placed on learning. Apply by March 1, to the Graduate Studies Awards Committee (grschol@uoguelph.ca) and include a description of the travel and a research statement (no more than 2 pages) indicating the relation of the trip to the project or describing the impact of the research communication on the student’s development. Students are also required to submit an itemized proposed budget detailing travel costs (no more than 1 page). The student’s advisor must also submit a letter (no more than one page) supporting the travel and its benefit to the student’s academic and/or research plan. Selection will be based on academic achievement, the strength of the research statement, and on the degree to which the student’s specific academic and/or research plan will be supported by the travel as described by the student’s advisor. In the case of a tie, the award will go to the student who, by nature of their work, will receive the most benefit from the travel in this specific case determined by the Graduate Studies Award Committee.

Students registered full-time or part-time in any masters or doctoral program pursuing travel to Europe for research or research communications (e.g. delivering a paper). Preference will be given in the following order 1)to students in the College of Arts 2)students travelling to Germany, Austria and/or Switzerland.
