Addressing community and economic development pressures in rural and small town places often means accessing information and research capacity. Community-based research (CBR) depends on two important variables: the capacity of CBR to generate good information, and the extent to which CBR is understood and constructed as a two-way relationship that includes a set of responsibilities for both re- searchers and communities.

The School of Environmental Design and Rural Development's Winter Social Party will be held on Friday, November 17, 2017 at the Italian Canadian Club.  This year's theme is "Music of the Decades".  This event is for all students, faculty and staff and their guests in SEDRD (including Landscape Architecture, Rural Planning and Development, Capacity Development and Extension, and Rural Studies) Doors open at 6:30 pm | Dinner served at 7:00 pm.

Rural Planning and Development Alumni Stephen Lindley, VP Aboriginal & Northern Affairs, SNC-Lavalin, will talk on exploring the dynamic relationships in infrastructure planning between mining companies, Government and First Nations Communities in the Ring of Fire Area. Stephen has been with SNC-Lavalin, Canada’s largest Canadian-owned engineering and construction firm, for over 30 years. All are welcome to attend.

Rural communities are challenged to bring together sustainable funding for conservation and watershed protection. These efforts have been perceived as ‘environmental’ work, and not necessarily linked to community basic needs. The first part of this webinar explores linking watershed protection to basic policy values of quality of life, infrastructure, and basic needs to change the way that watersheds are treated in funding.

Six policy analysts from the Ontario Farmers Association will join us as part of RPD*6220 - Planning and Development Policy Analysis. We will discuss the intricacies of policy development, the role of lobbying and the evolution of agriculture and food systems in Ontario. This will also be an opportunity to learn more about the profession and opportunities in policy development.  All are welcome to attend.

There will be an exhibit of the 10 Carden Rooftop Design Charrette drawings from Nov. 10 – Nov. 30th.  10 Carden will display the drawings done by the BLA and MLA students that they developed as a result of the charrette for the downtown space in Guelph.  The 10 Carden space is a community hub that provides shared space to work, learn, engage, create and collaborate.  Stop by to see the landscape architecture students’ drawings at the front entrance at 42 Carden Street, downtown Guelh.

The recent book From Black Horses to White Steeds: Building Community Resilience celebrates and critiques the dynamics of innovation, governance, and culture in place. This webinar will explore three of the case studies from the book that focuses on the strengths of local initiatives, the impacts of collective power, and re-envisioning of local assets. Join this webinar to learn more about how communities are building community resilience.

The Canada 150 Symposium: Reflect and Envision - Food Security / Borders / Indigenous Resistance is an opportunity to come together as a community to reflect on what we can learn from our collective past to envision Canada's national and global role in the 21st century.  Throughout the symposium, delegates will have an opportunity to hear from a variety of individuals with experience and disciplinary strength in the fields of food security, trade, national security, and indigenous issues.
