Troy is an installation artist whose career has evolved from a scenographic/performance design background. Trained in art history, architecture and theatre design, He has merged these disciplines to an artistic practice that focuses on the relationship of the body to three-dimensional space as it interacts with what it perceives. His current work revolves around the themes of wonder, immersion, spectatorship and intermediality. In search of building a visceral experience for the viewer, his work speculates that evoking elements of wonder, chance and discovery in the creative process can lead to an engaged and thoughtful participation by its viewer. For Troy, scenographic space has always embraced the notion of ‘constructed realities’, whether it is a maquette for theatre, a cabinet of wonder or an art installation. The layering of physical and ephemeral spaces with the body works like a three-dimensional collage to immerse the spectator into a reflective position where the mind is more receptive to abstract thought and experiences. Much of his work attempts to intrigue the viewer by presenting them with an evocative image that asks them to engage with the artwork more closely. It can be a peek-hole, a reflection, a larger sculptural mass that draws them in to a more intimate, immersive experience. He often draws on techniques used in historical devices of wonder to emulate the awe created when observing artworks from a unique point of view. This kind of intense exploration encourages the viewer to consider the artwork more carefully, pondering meaning for each moment in the context of the whole installation.

Static Apnea - Installation Artist for American Vicarious, Off-broadway NYC 2020
New York Times Review:

'The pitch-black interior feels like a perverse fun house: You navigate through a narrow, winding path with mirrors on each side until a walkway appears. (Troy Hourie did the daunting design.) The walls to your left and right glow a rich cobalt (the vivid lighting is by Zach Weeks), and, later, other piercing shades, that give the unnerving sense of being surrounded — trapped, even — by water.'

A(loft) Modulation - Scenic Designer for American Vicarious, Off-broadway NYC 2018
TheatreMania Review:

'As a simulacrum, (A)loft Modulation certainly impresses. Troy Hourie's set is breathtaking in its detailed re-creation of a messy New York loft in the late 1950s and early '60s, crammed to the gills with Leila Ben-Abdallah's props. With the set visible to the audience even before the play begins, you can practically feel the squalor these characters live in.'

Fall of the House of Usher- Director and Digital Scenographer for Mannes School of Music,  NYC 2018
Opera News Review:

‘Director Troy Hourie made good use of the flexibility of interpretation to create an imaginative production that had equal levels of realism and illusion. The Ernst C. Stiefel Concert Hall is a small, close space, which allowed Hourie to create an insular, claustrophobic atmosphere, so crucial to an effective portrayal of the House itself. The audience felt as if they were in the room with the characters. Hourie appeared in the production in the silent role of Poe himself. In this capacity, he also served to move the set pieces to fit various visual needs throughout the drama. A noteworthy moment occurred at the very beginning of the performance when Hourie as Poe moved around, setting the furniture for the opening scene. The sounds of him walking on the wooden floor and adjusting the props in an otherwise fully silent room gave a strong sense of what would have been the actual soundscape in an isolated rural house of the early nineteenth century The production played up the implication of an incestuous relationship between Roderick and Madeleine Usher. This was largely carried by the actors Payton Grgurovic and Gabriel Torres as the Young Madeline and the Young Roderick, flashback characters who mutely observe the action of the unfolding drama… As both this production of Philip Glass’ The Fall of the House of Usher and last season’s version of Robert Ashley’s Dust demonstrate, very exciting things are going on in the Mannes School of Music’s experimental opera endeavors.’
