Explore the skeleton of Glacier, a North Atlantic Right Whale
Découvrez le squelette de Glacier, une baleine noire de l'Atlantique Nord

Glacier was a male North Atlantic Right Whale born in 1984, and was 33 years old at the time of his death. He had been sighted frequently in the Bay of Fundy and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. He died sometime in June 2017 from blunt force trauma, likely caused by a ship strike, and appeared to have some history of fishing gear entanglement.

Engineering - Interdisciplinary Design Lab

Researchers at Guelph are developing new techniques to make rooftops lush with plant life. Given a complex set of design parameters, we designed and built a device that produces a new soil block product that may someday allow developers and contractors to inexpensively help green our cities and suburbs. This prototype machine was made mostly of parts that were fabricated on our waterjet cuter.

Entrepreneurership - Interdisciplinary Design Lab

In partnership with the College of Business and Economics Incubator Program, we are helping young entrepreneurs take their ideas from concept to reality. Using a combination of contemporary and traditional fabrication methods, we designed and built a signature ‘pull tap’ for Tariq Ahmed’s artisinal cider brewing start up. Revel Cider can be found in discerning pubs throughout the region.

Using a combination of laser scanning and digital haptic techniques, we are developing new surgical training tools for veterinarians. By creating reusable facsimiles of an internal organ in dogs, veterinarians are able to repeatedly practice complex operations long before attempting to do so on anyone’s pet.

Interdisciplinary Design Lab

The Digital Haptic Lab, run by sculptor Prof. Christian Giroux and Senior Design Engineer John Phillips, School of Fine Art and Music, is a space for researchers from the arts, engineering and sciences to come together and cross-pollinate ideas Equipped with a 3-D printer, a water jet cutter that can slice through steel and a digital haptic device (a virtual sculpting tool that allows users to develop unique 3-D designs on a computer), the lab allows users to develop products using modern advanced manufacturing methods..
