U of G offers prestigious wine course

People wanting to learn more about wines will get a chance this fall at the University of Guelph.
For the second year in a row, the U of G’s School of Hospitality & Tourism Management is offering prestigious wine courses of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, based in England.
The registration deadline is Aug. 9 for the Level 1 course, which runs four hours on each of two afternoons on the weekend of Sept. 21-22, and also for the nine-week Level 2 course, which runs Monday evenings starting Sept. 23.
There’s a fee for both of the on-campus courses, which can be taken with an exam to earn a certificate or just as an interest course without the exam. People should register early, as spaces are limited, a news release said.
The School of Hospitality & Tourism Management is also eyeing the possibility of offering a higher level Wine and Spirit Education Trust course for the first time, for people who have earned their Level 2 certification.
“For the winter we are looking at offering Level 3, and that would be new,” said Lisa Fodor, the school’s logistics coordinator.
Both courses this fall will be taught by William Predhomme, senior sommelier at Toronto’s Canoe Restaurant, who was one of two Canadians picked to compete in a “Best Sommelier of the World” competition held in Tokyo this spring. He made the quarter-finals and finished 17th out of more than 50 competitors.
The Level 1 course in wines, which provides a straightforward introduction to wines, is ideal for boosting the confidence of new or inexperienced front-line staff in the hospitality and retail sectors, the release said. It’s also useful for members of the public who want to know more about the main grape varieties and about matching wine with food.
The Level 2 course in wines and spirits is for people employed in the drinks and hospitality industries and for wine enthusiasts looking for in-depth knowledge.
