Congratulations to Adam Wright, MSc student in Rural Planning and Development and the Student Delegate for the Ontario Professional Planning Institute, on winning the prestigious Gerald Carrothers Graduate Scholarship. The Gerald Carrothers Graduate Scholarship assists in furthering planning education and recognizes a student OPPI member who is making a contribution to the community. The School of Environmental Design and Rural Development in partnership with the Ontario Farmland Trust recently hosted a symposium entitled Rural Resilience: Coping with Climate Change and Rising Energy Prices. Improving high-speed Internet access fo rural residents of southwestern Ontario is the goal of a new feasibility study involving University of Guelph researchers in the Capacity Development and Extension program at the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development.

Johnathan Behnke, a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture student, designed a creative concept to memorialize his friend Isaak Kornelsen through public space. Behnke designed a memorial parklet in honour of Kornelsen who died in an accident while cycling to work in Edmonton on August 27, 2012.

Each year, for the last 21 years, Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) students organize and execute an event to communicate their research findings to the public. This year the MLA Conference was held on March 25th in Guelph, Ontario at the Guelph Civic Museum.
This daylong event featured presentations by 16 advanced graduate students. Ranging in topics from participatory design to typography, and cross-cultural professional values to the ecological value of cemeteries, the presentations focused on communicating the student’s research work and findings from the last year.
When the University of Guelph's Branion Plaza needed a new look in time for U of G’s 50th anniversary in 2014, the University sought design expertise from the master of landscape architecture students. Twelve MLA students participated in the design competition. Ben Vander Veen won first prize for the best design, selected by a jury of professional landscape architects and University staff. The OALA Research and Innovation Award was presented to Professor Robert Brown on Friday, March 22, 2013 by the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects at the 2013 OALA Conference and Annual General Meeting held at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.
Winners for the 2012 OSSGA Provincial Student Design Competition:
Since 2001, the Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (OSSGA) annual Student Design Competition, generously funded by The Ontario Aggregate Resources Corporation, has been challenging Ontario University and College students to put their design skills to work by creating a rehabilitation plan for Ontario pits and quarries. Every year, OSSGA invites a diverse panel of qualified judges including aggregate land managers, landscape architects, biologists, and engineers to evaluate and award the best projects.
Each year the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects sponsors the World Landscape Architecture Month Poster Competition.
This year's theme was green roofs. Green roofs and green walls are a rapidly growing area of practice, offering an unprecedented level of integration between buildings and landscapes.
Two honourable mentions were awarded to Diane Relyea, a Master of Landscape Architecture student and Adam Léger, a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture student.
