International Women in French conference 2014

“Like sexual desire, memory never stops. It links the dead to the living, real beings to imaginary ones, dreams to history.” (Annie Ernaux, Les Années, 15.)

In honour of the 20^th anniversary of the Women in French Studies journal (1993), this conference will focus on women, memory and the various forms remembering takes in works by or about French and Francophone women. We invite participants to reflect on the ways that French and Francophone women are remembered, commemorated, anthologized, studied and taught, and the ways that they themselves write about memory in novels, poetry, theatre, film, autofiction, autobiography, biography, etc. We also welcome papers dealing with associations, academies, publishing houses, journals, festivals and exhibitions that commemorate creative work by women and mark the important events in their/ our history.

En honneur du XXème anniversaire de la revue Women in French Studies (1993), ce colloque prend pour thème les femmes, la mémoire et les formes qu'elle revêt dans les œuvres par ou concernant les Françaises et les Francophones. Nous invitons les participant-e-s à réfléchir aux multiples façons dont on commémore, recueille, rappelle, étudie et enseigne les œuvres des Françaises et des Francophones, ainsi qu’à la manière dont ces femmes évoquent le souvenir dans leurs romans, recueils de poésie, textes dramatiques, films, autofictions, autobiographies, biographies, etc. Nous invitons aussi des communications concernant les associations, académies, maisons d’édition, journaux, festivals et expositions qui commémorent la production créatrice des femmes et marquent les étapes importantes de leur/notre histoire.
