UGSRP Symposium "Plant-Based Menus, 'Fad' or Trend?"

The University of Guelph Sustainable Restaurant Project (UGSRP) will be holding its 7th annual symposium "Plant-Based Menus, 'Fad' or Trend?" from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. on Wed. March 7th.  Fantastic speakers include: Steven Salm (Chase Hospitality Group); Daniel Hadida (The Restaurant at Pearl Morissette); Sal Howell, Founder and Proprietor of the River Cafe & Deane House; Mark Hladik (Earls Restaurants) and Jason Jurchuk (Henry's Tempeh Inc.).   FREE TO THE PUBLIC

Registration deadline: Pale Ales: Hops, India and Imperials Seminar

The Pale Ale is one of the most popular beer styles brewing these days. The category itself is broad and encompasses a full range of aroma, colour, flavour, and regional flair. We will cover the beer styles under this umbrella, the importance of hops, and the pale's long history in brewing. This offering of the Pale Ales: Hops, India and Imperials Seminar will take place Sunday, February 25, 2018.

HFTM Job Expo

Open to any student enrolled in an HTM course. The HFTM Job Expo connects hundreds of students to over 25 organizations annually. The Expo is intended for organizations offering full-time, part-time and/or summer employment to HFTM students at the University of Guelph.

Registration deadline: Prud'homme Beer Certification® Level 2 - Beer Specialist

This course in beer education is designed and developed for participants who wish to further their knowledge of beer for use in the following: the hospitality industry; as an agent for a brewer/distributor of beer; or, beverage alcohol education. The focus is to provide more detailed insights into brewing ingredients and processes, draught systems while introducing Canadian brewing history and further investigating negative sensory components.

Registration Deadline: Chardonnay Seminar

This seminar will explore the many styles of Chardonnay while we discuss how one grape varietal can taste drastically different from product to product. The topics will include oaked versus unoaked wines, hot and cold growing regions and why Chardonnay is grown in so many places across the world. We will investigate why the ABC (anything-but-chardonnay) trend has become so popular when Chardonnay is considered, by sommeliers, one of the most noble grapes in the world.

HAFA/HFTM Alumni Fall Social & Awards Night

Enjoy networking with your fellow classmates while enjoying a silent auction and a mixology cocktail bar. Ticket price is $12 per person and includes a free drink ticket and light canapés. It also covers two mixology stations where experienced bartenders will teach you how to make fun and delicious cocktails. You get to drink your creations!

Registration deadline: Beer Basics Seminar

This seminar will cover everything from the difference between ales and lagers, micro vs. macro, core and extra ingredients, the brewing process and its history, and how to snuff out a bad beer. We will cover the different beer styles, how and why they came about, and of course taste a couple examples. Everything you need to hold your own in a craft beer bar. This offering of the Beer Basics Seminar will take place Sunday, October 29.

Registration deadline: WSET Level 1 Award in Wines

Please register early. These popular certifications fill up BEFORE the deadline date. The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 1 in Wines is an entry level qualification providing a straightforward introduction to wine. It is ideal for boosting the confidence of new or inexperienced front line staff in the hospitality and retail sectors.  It is also a great course for those wanting to know the main grape varieties and food and wine matching. This offering of the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines will take place Sunday, November 5, 2017.
