To celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial and Guelph’s 190th anniversary, Guelph Museums launches a unique lecture series to reflect on our collective history and the theme of nation building. Building Canada Lectures, presented in partnership with the University of Guelph, is set for the second Wednesday of each month at 7 PM at Guelph Civic Museum.

March 8, Matthew Hayday presents, Celebrating Canada: How commemorations and national days have shaped our country Doors open at 6:30 PM with lecture beginning at 7 PM. Admission by donation.

Matthew Hayday is a professor of Canadian history at the University of Guelph. A specialist in political history, his research deals with issues related to national identity, language policy, celebrations and commemorations, public policy and cultural policy. His most recent books are So They Want Us to Learn French: Promoting and Opposing Bilingualism in English-Speaking Canada and Celebrating Canada, volume 1: Holidays, National Days, and the Crafting of Identities.
