On November 29, 2013, Professor Paul E. Lovejoy, Canada Research Chair in African Diaspora History presents: Transformations in Slavery: A History of Slavery in Africa"
The talk takes place in MacKinnon 308 beginning at 11:30.
For the past 40 years, Dr. Lovejoy has explored the history of slavery and the slave trades in Africa and the dynamics of the African Diaspora. His award-winning book, Transformations in Slavery: A History of Slavery in Africa is a classic text on the subject. First published in 1983, and now in its 3rd edition, it remains the only synthesis of the research on slavery and the slave trades in Africa that covers the entire continent. The sheer breadth of analysis and the provocative theory that under-girds the book not only catalyzed other book length studies of the topic, but have also retained this book as a darling in African slavery and slave trade courses.
Paul Lovejoy's current research involves the construction of a digital archive of enslaved Africans that will provide researchers with an unbelievable wealth of detailed information from which to explore broad themes of global history.
All welcome!!
