Raised on a farm near London, Clay Switzer joined the OAC Class of 1951 where he made many friendships that have lasted and deepened over the years. Following grad work in Plant Physiology at Iowa State, he returned to OAC – as a professor, department head and eventually, in 1972, Dean. One of the highlights of his tenure as Dean was the celebration of OAC’s Centennial in 1974.

Following his second term as Dean, Clay became Ontario’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture (now OMAF) for five years, and then took on various consulting and volunteer positions including Chair of the University of Guelph Alumni Association. He also chaired fund raising committees for the Guelph Turfgrass Institute and for the Conservatory Greenhouse and Gardens, and was Co-Chair of the OAC 125th anniversary in 1999.

His greatest joy over the years has been his many contacts with students, fellow OAC Alumni, colleagues and others in agriculture. His aim and guiding philosophy has been to respond to the needs of others in an empathetic way, and to strive toward consensus through conversation and consultation.

Last but not least, Clay has been and remains an  participant in the Guelph community: Rotarian, curler, golfer, fastball player and coach.
