Congratulations to Professor Wayne Caldwell who was elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners at the CIP national conference in Ottawa on July 4, 2019.
Landscape Architects, Maurice Nelischer, Professor Emeritus, with critical help from Kendall Flower (BLA, MPlan alumnus ), have gained approval for the conceptual design for the forecourt plaza for the new Gordon Lang School of Business and Economics. The site is in front of Macdonald Hall which was recently renovated to accommodate the new college. Construction on the plaza will be started in April 2020. This is a highly visible campus location at the north end of Wingard Walk . Nelischer designed the southern terminus of the walk at Branion plaza which was built a few years ago.
Congratulations to Bachelor of Landscape Architecture students who won the top spot of the BOUNDLESS: A Post-Secondary Design Challenge focused on creative solutions for accessibility in Ontario. The competition is in its seventh edition and is hosted by Design Exchange in partnership with the Province of Ontario. The province-wide, post-secondary design competition coincided with National AccessAbility Week and recognized proposals that showcase innovation in accessible and universal design.
Canadian regional development today involves multiple actors operating within nested scales from local to national and even international levels. Recent approaches to making sense of this complexity have drawn on concepts such as multi-level governance, relational assets, integration, innovation, and learning regions.

This exhibition highlights Brutalism—an architectural style that rose in popularity during the 1960s—and the impact it had at U of G. The exhibit will explore what we can learn from this building style, and how its attitude may inform our campus evolution.
Dr. Sheri Longboat and five of her graduate students in the Rural Planning & Development program of the School of Environmental Design & Rural Development (SEDRD), Cameron Curran, Emily Bowerman, Natalya Garrod, Erinn Lee and Renee Le Roux, presented at the Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) national conference at Blue Mountain this year.
On Thursday June 20th, 2019 from 10:00am-11:00am the Great Lakes First Nations Fisheries Governance project will be hosting a Webinar to present preliminary findings and foster discussion with our First Nations partners. The research team has been conducting interviews and analyzing the data collected for the past year and have found some interesting results.
Rural studies PhD candidate, Lissel Hernandez Gongora, conducted a webinar last May 8th in coordination with the Rural Policy Learning Commons. Lissel spoke about polycentric governance in climate change policies. The presentation included: 1)The theory of polycentric governance, 2) The case study implementation of REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) in Mexico as an example of the polycentric approach in climate change policies, and 3) Recommendations for decision-makers.
Erinn Lee is a Master’s student in the Rural Planning and Development program at the University of Guelph. She is also a participant in the Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) Scholarship Program. As part of this program, she had the opportunity to participate in a professional development course focused on the agricultural industry with other graduate students from diverse research disciplines.
