Professor Sean Kelly to Receive CSLA Teaching Award

Congratulations to Professor Sean Kelly, Director of the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development who will receive the Canadian Society of Landscape Architect’s Teaching Award for 2017.  The CSLA Teaching Award recognizes an individual who has made a substantial and significant contribution to landscape architecture education.

“Academia is key to strengthening the field of communication for development (C4D) around the world, as universities play an important role in building skills in the field and in developing the human resources that will plan and implement C4D programmes, as well as influence policies”, states the global knowledge base known as The Communication Initiative Network.

Dr. Gibson Re-Elected President of the Canadian Community Economic Development Network

On July 27, 2017, Dr. Ryan Gibson was re-elected President of the Canadian Community Economic Development Network (CCEDNet). CCEDNet is a member-driven, not for-profit, charitable organization made up of community-based organizations, co-operatives, social enterprises, practitioners, active citizens, researchers, and other organizations involved in community economic development.

Chronic Drinking Water Issues at Six Nations

Despite a new water treatment plant at Six Nations, over 90% of the community continue to lack household access to safe drinking water. Professor Longboat from the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development joins other Six Nations community members and talks with CBC radio about the chronic drinking water issues at Six Nations of the Grand River territory.  See CBC news article here.

 

Gibson Shares Canada’s Rural Policy Lessons with Scottish Parliament

Over the years, Canada has accumulated many lessons learned when it comes to developing and implementing policies in rural areas. These lessons were shared with parliamentarians on June 6, 2017 when Dr. Ryan Gibson presented to the Scottish Parliamentary Cross Party Committee on Rural Policy. The presentation reflect on Canada’s rural policies and programs, what has worked, what has not worked, and what lessons emerged from the various experiences.
