Over the years, Canada has accumulated many lessons learned when it comes to developing and implementing policies in rural areas. These lessons were shared with parliamentarians on June 6, 2017 when Dr. Ryan Gibson presented to the Scottish Parliamentary Cross Party Committee on Rural Policy. The presentation reflect on Canada’s rural policies and programs, what has worked, what has not worked, and what lessons emerged from the various experiences.

New book edited by Prof Karen Landman & Ashlee Cunsolo entitled "Mourning Nature:  Hope at the Heart of Ecological Loss and Grief". Book launch will take place Tuesday, May 30th, 2017 at 7:00 pm at the Bookshelf, 41 Quebec Street, Guelph.

Ashlee Cunsolo is director of the Labrador Institute and an adjunct professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Karen Landman is professor of landscape architecture at the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development at the University of Guelph.

A group of landscape architecture students recently took a trip down to the University of Maryland from March 23rd - 25th for the 47th annual LABash conference. LABash (originally founded in 1970 at the University of Guelph) is an annual student-planned conference for landscape architecture students and professionals in North America. This year, the University of Guelph had the second highest representation at the conference with a total of 16 students attending.

In collaboration with colleagues from around Ontario and OMAFRA, the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development's Dr. Lauzon and Rural Studies PhD student Valencia Gaspard are pursuing a project reviewing the impacts of precarious employment on the social, emotional and physical health of rural communities in Ontario. This project's outcomes will be useful in crafting rural policy and programs, mitigating the negative impact of precarious employment trends, and better understanding holistic community health.

What is the future role for the Government of Canada in rural infrastructure? Dr. Ryan Gibson presented to the Senate Committee on National Finance regarding rural infrastructure investment. The Senate Committee has been studying the design and delivery of the government’s infrastructure commitment, and has asked for comments to address the effects of future infrastructure investments on rural development in Canada.

Joseph Clement’s Integral Man, debuting at Toronto’s Hot Docs festival, chronicles the art, architecture and mind behind Canada’s greatest private dwelling.

How can researchers share their knowledge with communities and regions in a more useful format? A recent workshop in St John's, Newfoundland explored this exact topic. Fifteen people from across Canada and Scotland joined for the Radio/Podcast Workshop that explored how to use audio storytelling skills to share knowledge. The two-day workshop helped participants understand what makes a good story, how to conduct an interview, what makes for a good sound recording, and how all the different elements of an audio story come together.
