Philosophy of Art (PHIL*3050)

Term: Winter 2013

This course will deal with philosophical issues pertaining to art. We will look at, in detail, the central approaches to art: representationalism (imitation theory), expression theory, formalist theory, institutional theory. Important historical figures will be discussed (e.g. Plato, Aristotle, Hume, Kant, Collingwood, Wittgenstein), as well as more recent work: Danto, Dickie, Berger, Freedland. Many artworks will be discussed and viewed and heard--and considered for their relevance to philosophical issues.
