GTA hiring process (draft)

Process for making GTA offers

This process was developed in consultation with the office of Faculty and Staff Relations in Winter 2015.

Terminology

“program time” = 6 semesters for (full time) MA students and 12 semesters for (full time) PhD students. (This is defined in the Graduate Calendar.)

The process

There are three "levels" of consideration.

Level 1 contains each student who has been guaranteed a certain level of funding for the semester and who doesn't have external funding (e.g. SSHRC, OGS) to get them to that level.  Each of these students is offered 1 GTA position. The particular assignments are allocated according to the department’s discretion.

Level 2  contains each student who is within their program time. (This includes each student in Level 1.) These applicants are ordered in terms of qualifications (typically, amount of teaching experience) and offered GTA assignments in descending order (with seniority as a tiebreaker).

Any GTA assignment declined at this stage is then offered to other Level 2 applicants (who applied for it). This process continues until every Level 2 applicant for the position has declined it.

Level 3  contains each student registered in the program. Since we move to Level 3 only when Level 2 is exhausted, in effect Level 3 comprises those students outside their program time. These applicants are ordered in terms of qualifications (typically, amount of teaching experience) and offered GTA assignments in descending order (with seniority as a tiebreaker).
