Non-BA students requiring English

Increasingly, students in other programs and colleges require 0.5-1 credits in English, either for their current program or for applications to graduate programs. These are your options for gaining those credits:

·         ENGL*1200: Reading the Contemporary World: this course is offered in Fall, Winter and (generally) Summer, and may be offered in either face-to-face or distance education format. ENGL*1200 is in high demand across the campus and fills up quickly, so if you know you need it, enrol for it as soon as possible—we cannot guarantee that you will be able to gain a spot in the semester of your choice.

·         ENGL*1410: Major Authors: this course is offered in Winter and is an alternative to ENGL*1200 (if your program currently only lists ENGL*1200, talk to an advisor—s/he may well be happy to substitute this course).

·         2000-level lectures: If you have already done 0.5 credits in English (or in some cases, WMST*1000 or THST*1040—see below), you can enrol in any 2000-level general lecture (any 2000 number except 2080, 2120, 2130 or creative writing). We usually offer at least two of these lectures per semester, and the offerings change according to semester (Fall or Winter) and year (even or odd). While WMST*1000 and THST*1040 aren’t English courses, they do fulfill the prerequisite requirements for some 2000-level English lectures. WMST*1000 allows you to enrol for ENGL*2190: Representation and Sexuality, and ENGL*2880: Women in Literature. THST*1040 allows you enrol for ENGL*2040: Latina/o Literature and Cultural Production.

NB: ENGL*1080: Reading the Past is only available to first-year BA students and students who have declared an English major/minor/area of concentration—it is not available to those looking for general English credits. If your program or college allows it, you are of course welcome to combine an English minor/major with your current specialty in which case you will need to enrol in ENGL*1080.
