Philosophy of Art (PHIL*3050)

What is artistic understanding and how is it related to philosophical understanding? This course offers students the opportunity to engage with five key thinkers in the philosophy of art as well as the skills to reflect philosophically on their own artistic experience. We will consider topics such as the nature of the work of art, the relationship between artist and audience, the role of community, genius and virtuosity, embodiment, representation, and the relationship between form and content.
