Location: University of Guelph, with fieldwork in Manitoulin Island

Project Description

The WISE and Young labs are seeking applications for an M.Sc. student position to work in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island (Ontario, Canada). The project will focus on leading community-based research aiming to reconnect youth with the Land and get them involved with species-at-risk plant pollination studies. The student will work with First Nation Elders and community members to develop insect sampling protocols that prioritize Indigenous knowledge and cultural values. 

The student will be co-supervised by Dr. Jesse Popp and Dr. Andrew D. Young.

An M.Sc. student will:

  • Engage in community-led interdisciplinary research that embraces multiple ways of knowing
  • Prioritize community outreach and community uptake of the project
  • Lead entomological and botanical fieldwork in a wetland environment
  • Develop biodiversity sampling protocols that prioritize Indigenous values
  • Work in partnership with Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory

Qualified candidates will have:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 (>75% average)
  • Field work experience and valid G Driver's License
  • Indigenous cultural competency, or willingness to learn
