Culinary Extravaganza in Support of Honey Bee Research

Ten great chefs serve 1,000 dishes for a great cause. On November 11th, chefs from Canada, the United States and England gathered at Toronto's Buca Osteria & Enoteca to raise money in support of Honey Bee Research at the University of Guelph.

In today's Globe and Mail, HTM Professor Erna van Duren is quoted in the food industry news article, 'Heinz to close Ontario faculty, trim 740 jobs".

"The Berkshire-led buyout of Heinz, announced in February, prompted fears it would begin to close plants in pursuit of efficiencies, said Erna van Duren, a professor at the University of Guelph who works with the food processing industry"

CME Appoints Dr. Martin Gooch as HTM Adjunct Faculty

Photo of Dr. Martin GoochDr. Martin Gooch has been appointed adjunct faculty with the School.  Dr. Gooch has 28 years of management experience in the international agri-food industry, having worked in the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada on product and process innovation and marketing from a value chain perspective.

Advanced Level Wine Certification Now Offered

The School has added the advanced Level 3 Award in Wines & Spirits certification to its current Level 1 and 2 offerings. 

The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines & Spirits is designed to give a more comprehensive coverage of the wines and spirits of the world.  Students will benefit from in-depth tastings where they will learn to identify product style and quality.

The course will be held on six consecutive Saturdays starting March 8th.   Details

 

New Restaurant Innovation Competition Launched

HTM will be hosting the inaugural Frankie Tomatto's Restaurant Innovation competition on March 1st, 2014. A student competition to stimulate creation and development of innovative ideas and concepts broadly applicable to the restaurant industry.  Find all details on the website. 2013 Taste Canada Gala

On November 4th, HTM faculty and students attended the 2013 Taste Canada Gala, an Oscaresque award ceremony and reception for food writers of the Canadian hospitality industry. The event was hosted by Stefano Faita, whose hit CBC show "In the Kitchen with Stefano" has produced past winners. The event took place at Oliver & Bonacini's beautiful Arcadian Court located at 401 Bay in downtown Toronto. The University of Guelph was a Gold sponsor alongside Oliver & Bonacini, Fairmont, Foodland Ontario, Zwilling J.A.

Gourmet Food & Wine Expo 2013

STUDENTS:  On Friday, November 15th, the annual Gourmet Food & Wine Expo will be taking place at the Toronto Convention Center.

HTMSA will be selling a limited number of tickets on November 13th and 14th (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.) in the MINS FACS Lounge.  Stay tuned for the costs through HFTMSA.

The bus will board at 5:45pm in front of PJ’s Restaurant (MACS building), depart at 6pm, and will leave the expo at 10pm, returning to campus at approximately 11pm.

It will be a great night of food and wine!

 

'Think Pink' Event a Huge Success

HTMSA event "Think Pink", an annual fundraiser in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Assocation was held last night at 39 Carden Street.  It was a great evening of food, drinks and live music featuring several HTM students.
