Posted on Friday, May 15th, 2026

We are thrilled to share that FARE PhD graduate, Dr. Jamie Naylor, has been recognized with an Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award for his dissertation “Three Essays in Applied Economics: Identifying and Measuring Strategic Behaviour in Food and Water Systems” (supervised by Professor Brady Deaton, Jr.) by the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society. Jamie’s work applies economic theory and cutting-edge quantitative methods to tackle pressing challenges in drinking water quality and food security, delivering policy-relevant insights, from providing the first causal evidence of strategic under-reporting in public water systems, to advancing theory on competition involving cooperatives in remote food markets, and developing improved methods to assess the effectiveness of Canada’s Nutrition North subsidy. This is an incredible achievement that reflects both the rigour and real-world impact of the research. Congratulations, Jamie, on this well-deserved recognition!

This award highlights Jamie’s exceptional scholarly contributions and the broader importance of applied economics in addressing real-world challenges. The work stands as a strong example of how rigorous academic research can inform better policy and improve outcomes for communities, particularly in areas as vital as safe drinking water and affordable food. Wishing Jamie continued success and impact in the next chapter of this journey!

The award will be presented during the Awards Ceremony on June 4, 2026, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, in the Pearson Room at the Lord Elgin Hotel, Ottawa.
