Part-Time Students

Assistance for Part-Time Students

Students who are taking from 20 to 59 per cent of a full course load are considered part-time students. In order to apply for part-time student loans, please visit the OSAP website.

Interest-Free Status for Part-Time Students

While you are in school, you are required to make interest payments on your Part-Time Canada Student Loan(s), but you do not have to make payments on the principal. If the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) and/or your previous lender(s) are not advised that you are continuing your studies, you will be asked to start full repayment of your loans (principal and interest). Therefore, you are responsible for ensuring that your previous part-time loan(s) remain in interest-only status if you are continuing in part-time or full-time studies for the current academic year.

In order to maintain interest-only status, you must ensure that NSLSC and/or the financial institution holding your previous loan(s) is informed that you are back in school; you can inform them by completing a Canada Student Financial Assistance Program Confirmation of Enrolment (Schedule 2) form. This can be completed electronically with NSLSC online services. If you have any questions about the process or are unable to complete the online process, contact finaid@uoguelph.ca for assistance.

If you are receiving an OSAP loan at the same time as you are making interest payments on a previous Part-time Canada Student Loan, you may request that these costs be considered when your financial need is assessed.
