Joseph Shea-Carter - PhD Student

School of English and Theatre Studies

Joseph Shea-Carter is a PhD student in Literary Studies in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph where he researches the important role experimental, independent expression can have when simultaneously thinking about and beyond subaltern spaces. He is especially interested in seemingly disparate pieces of poetry, film, and radio on the peripheries of mainstream culture that refuse assimilation to predominate or canonical Western conceptions of space and place. His dissertation work is focused on the broader function of "incommensurable" art, especially its capacity to foreground material changes within or beyond the supposed limits of contemporary political, social, and cultural spaces. He has a BA and MA from the University of Toronto where he studied English and Philosophy.
