Intermediate German II W17 (GERM*2500)

Course objectives: This is an intermediate course in German, which develops and strengthens your language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) further and provides cultural and current information about the German-speaking countries. It includes review and deepening of what you have learned and builds on those abilities.


Learning outcomes: Given that students will invest the time and effort necessary, at the end of this course they should:

  • Be able to demonstrate a level of proficiency at what the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages calls “Basic User” (A2+), which means:
    • Listening: understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar topics that uses high-frequency vocabulary; understand the main points in  messages and announcements on a wider spectrum of topics
  • Speaking: communicate in routine tasks and situations involving familiar topics, including situations likely to arise when travelling in an area where German is spoken
  • Reading: read short texts of moderate complexity on a variety of familiar topics
  • Writing: write short connected texts on familiar topics, applying concepts of basic grammar (all basic concepts of German grammar have been introduced by the end of GERM*2490), and thus involving some complex sentences
  • Be able to discuss various aspects of life, social organization and culture in German-speaking countries
  • Be conversant with all basic German grammatical concepts and apply them in speech and writing


Prerequisites: German*2490 or permission of instructor.



Required: Ute Koithan, Helen Schmitz, Tanja Sieber. Aspekte 1: Mittelstufe Deutsch (B1+). Langenscheidt. Kursbuch 1 und Arbeitsbuch 1

Method of Presentation:  2 classroom hours, plus 2 mandatory seminar hours.
