Our Sympathies: Peter Hannam
The Ontario Agricultural College community is saddened by the passing of Peter Hannam (OAC ’62), a visionary leader in Canadian agriculture who helped transform soybeans into a major crop in Ontario. He was 85.
Peter’s passion for agriculture was nurtured at OAC, where he developed the foundation for a career in the agri-food sector. As an active member and leader of the Class of 1962, Peter maintained strong ties to OAC throughout his life, serving as a strategic resource for the Dean’s Office. He was always willing to offer advice and help bridge connections between OAC and the agricultural industry.
After graduating, Peter went on to serve as president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, lead First Line Seeds, and champion food-grade soybeans and identity-preserved markets. He helped introduce Roundup Ready soybeans to Canada and launched initiatives like Project SOY at U of G to encourage students to think about the potential of soybeans in the development of new products and business opportunities for entrepreneurs.
Peter was a skilled connector and networker who opened many doors for research, philanthropy, and collaboration. His impact was recognized with numerous awards, including an Honourary Doctorate of Science from the University of Guelph.
The OAC community extends sincere condolences to Peter’s family and friends. His obituary can be found here.
