Farm Safety, Working with Animals and WHMIS

Species-specific sessions delivered at appropriate locations (e.g. poultry, swine, equine, bovine).

This course is directed towards research station, OVC summer workers and new researchers.

The course reviews safee handling of animals and zoonoses associated with the various species and the specific machinery hazards encountered at each location.  The workshop covers worker health and safety awareness training topics, including:

  • An introduction to the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • The University Safety Policy
  • Safety administration at the U of G
  • Duties and responsibilities
  • Rights of the worker, including work refusals
  • Incident Reporting
  • Hazards in the workplace and their controls, including
    • Working in heat, sun safety, and biting insects
    • Back care and proper lifting techniques
  • Safety Resources
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) as requested

Specific contents for the species and equipment specific portion of the program includes -feedcarts, augers, PTO driven equipment etc.
