Field Work Safety and WHMIS

This course is designed to address the needs of summer staff and researchers hired to perform crop related field research tasks at research stations, Guelph Turf Grass, Guelph Campus and other farm and field locations.

This workshop covers many general safety topics, including:

  • An introduction to the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • The University Safety Policy
  • Safety administration at the U of G
  • Duties and responsibilities
  • Rights of the worker, including work refusals
  • Incident Reporting
  • Hazards in the workplace and their controls, including
    • Working in heat, sun safety, and biting insects
    • Back care and proper lifting techniques
  • Safety Resources
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

Specific contents for the field work portion of the program includes: the specific machinery hazards encountered at various locations , i.e. seed cleaners, separators, hand carts and laboratory type work.

Available at Guelph campus/ local stations, Bradford and Simcoe Research station.
