New OAC 150th Projects Coordinator

The OAC Dean’s Office is pleased to announce Jordan Terpstra as the projects coordinator for OAC’s 150th anniversary celebrations. Jordan begins in this new role on February 6, 2023.

In collaboration with staff and alumni stakeholders, including a steering committee, Jordan will plan and deliver events, products, and projects to engage the OAC community in celebrations around the college’s 150th anniversary.

Senior Advancement Manager for OAC Update

Alumni Affairs and Development and the OAC Dean’s Office are pleased to make two announcements regarding the senior advancement manager role for OAC.

Our Sympathies: Hank Orr

It is with sympathy that we share the passing of Dr. Hank Orr (BSA 1943) on January 19, 2023. After graduating from OAC and serving in World War II, Hank became a faculty member in the Poultry Science Department (now Department of Animal Biosciences) in 1946. He retired in 1984 and was inducted into the Canadian Poultry Research Network Hall of Fame in 2021.

Our Sympathies: Jack Alex

It is with sympathy that we share the passing of Dr. Jack Alex on January 14, 2023. Jack joined the Department of Botany (later the School of Environmental Science) in 1968. Two of his lasting professional legacies were serving on the committee which oversaw the creation of The Arboretum at the University of Guelph, and writing the book Ontario Weeds.

$ 2M Gift to Support Field Crops Research, Teaching at U of G’s Ridgetown Campus

Protecting grain crops from costly plant diseases under climate change and other factors is the main goal of a new $2-million gift to the University of Guelph from Grain Farmers of Ontario. The funding announced today will support a new Grain Farmers of Ontario Professorship in Field Crop Pathology at U of G’s Ridgetown Campus. A faculty member will be appointed this year in the Department of Plant Agriculture within U of G’s Ontario Agricultural College (OAC).

University of Guelph teams achieve six top-five finishes in animal welfare assessment competition

What do a chicken, a cow, an octopus, a dog and a cat have in common? All were a part of this year’s American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) animal welfare assessment contest, with University of Guelph competitors walking away with multiple wins and top-five finishes.

University of Guelph undergraduate, graduate and veterinary students flew to Raleigh, North Carolina on Friday, November 18 for the weekend competition held at North Carolina State University alongside 22 other competing universities, to test their animal welfare assessment skills.

Career Opportunity: Projects Coordinator, OAC 150th

Reporting to the Associate Dean - External Relations (ADER), Ontario Agricultural College (OAC), the OAC 150th Projects Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing and executing a number of diverse projects and events related to OAC’s 150th Anniversary. In conjunction with the Associate Dean External Relations (ADER) and other collaborators, the incumbent will conceptualize, recommend, and implement project plans to deliver events, products, and projects that engage the diverse internal and external OAC community. Specific responsibilities include: event planning, coordination and execution; project logistics; supporting the development of OAC Heritage Space materials and displays; coordinating activities of the OAC 150th Volunteer Steering committee; working with the OAC communications team in crafting engagement-focused communications; assisting with volunteer recruitment, training and supervision; development of digital and analogue materials that capture OAC’s 150th anniversary events and projects; donor engagement; supporting the ADER with other activities as required.
