The Day of Mourning - April 28

NOTE: 

Due to inclement weather, the Day of Mourning event will take place in the University Centre (UC) courtyard indoors beginning at noon.

If possible we will still march from the Portico, meeting there at 11:30am, departing at 11:45am for a noon arrival at the UC.

When we complete the formal part of the ceremony, we will go from the Courtyard to the UC flag pole area to lower the flags to half-mast to conclude the ceremony.

The University of Guelph will lower its flags to half-mast at noon on Friday, April 26th to mark the Day of Mourning in Canada.

This is the 28th anniversary of the event, observed on April 28 each year to honour people who have died or been injured on the job. Once the flags are lowered to half-mast, they will remain so until night fall on Sunday, April 28th.

A joint proclamation recognizing the day has been issued by U of G and the University’s employee groups.

A ceremony and procession will begin at 11:45 a.m. at the portico on Johnston Green and end in front of the University Centre.

A flag-lowering ceremony to be held at noon will include remarks from University officials and members of the Central Joint Health and Safety Committee. Members of the community wishing to take part in the ceremony are asked to congregate in front of the University Centre by 11:55 a.m.

The National Day of Mourning was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991. Now marked in 80 countries, the day has been adopted by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations and the International Confederation of Free Trade.
