Sharing a Co-worker’s Grief

When a co-worker experiences the death of a loved one it can be tough to know exactly what to say or do. You may feel uncomfortable, awkward, afraid of intruding or worried that you will say something to make them feel worse. Here are a few helpful things to say and do as well as a few tips for things to avoid.

CUPE 1334, University Ratify Agreement

Members of CUPE Local 1334, which represents about 250 trades, maintenance and service worker employees, and the University of Guelph have ratified the agreement that was reached earlier this month.

In a joint message issued Feb. 7 about the agreement, Martha Harley, assistant vice-president (human resources), and Janice Folk Dawson, president of CUPE Local 1334, said:

February is heart healthy month: The face of heart disease is changing

Many women think of cardiovascular disease as a “man’s disease”. That’s simply not true. In fact, women are more likely than men to die of a heart attack or stroke.

In Canada, stroke kills 45 per cent more women than men. Women are 16 per cent more likely than men to die after a heart attack. Only one in seven women are aware that heart disease and stroke are their biggest health concern…..

HR Surpasses United Way Department Goal

The 2010 United Way campaign has come to a close and Human Resources would like to thank everyone who supported our departmental campaign.  Our final campaign total was $9,394.41 which greatly surpasses our campaign goal of $7,729.

HR Exceeding United Way Goal

Human Resources set this year's United Way goal at $7729.00.  Through generous donations via pledge cards, weekly wine raffles and a very successful Pulled Pork Luncheon they have already surpassed their goal currently at $9000.00

Our final fundraising effort is the "Basket Raffle".  If you haven't already purchased tickets there is still time!  Baskets are on display at the Human Resources Reception area.  The draw will take place Friday, November 26 @ 3 pm.  Tickets are $2, 3 for $5 or 8 for $10.

Sun Life Plan Member Services Gets a Makeover

It’s time for the Sun Life Financial Plan Member Services sign-in page to get a fresh new look. On September 26, the member sign-in page will have a new name and more information to help employees make the most of the plan.

Not only will employees be able to sign in to complete transactions and find the information they are looking for, they will also be able to do more directly on the sign-in page.

mySunLife launches September 26.

Public Sector Compensation Restraint

The Ontario government recently passed the Public Sector Compensation Restraint to Protect Public Services Act, 2010.  The legislation prohibits compensation increases for non-bargaining employees in the broader public sector before the beginning of April 2012.
